General Waste
WM101 offers tailored general waste collection services suited to all business needs. We can also advise on government legislation and recommend methods for managing your waste and reducing waste output.
Our General Waste Bin Solutions
The appropriate storage and collection of general waste is essential for keeping working environments clean, tidy, and free from health and safety hazards – whether that be odour, litter, pests, contamination, or fires.
At WM101, we supply a wide range of general waste bins, balers, and compactors to suit every business size, type, and location. We are partnered with fully licenced waste carriers across the UK, providing reliable nationwide coverage for one-off clearances or regular, scheduled collections.
Our general waste disposal services cover all kinds of non-recyclable materials and daily rubbish, including:
- Non-recyclable plastics (cling film, snack wrappers, bubble wrap & coated wrapping papers)
- Non-hazardous cleaning products (wet wipes, tissues, sponges & cloths)
- Non-compostable food waste (bones & leftover meat)
What Happens to General Waste?
In the UK, almost a quarter of general waste ends up in landfill where it will slowly degrade and release harmful greenhouse gases.
Where possible, general waste can sometimes be utilised even when it can’t be recycled. Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) plants shred, dry, and burn waste to produce electricity.
General waste can make up most of an organisation’s waste output, making it crucial for businesses to identify methods for reducing general waste production. At WM101, we can discuss your general waste bin volumes and, where appropriate, recommend ways to maximise reuse and recycling opportunities.
Additionally, the use of balers and compactors can compress general waste into smaller bundles so that you can fit more waste into your bin if your site lacks space for extra containers.
General Waste Bin Management: Waste Transfer Note
Businesses are responsible for presenting a Waste Transfer Note (WTN) for each load of general waste that leaves the premises. This is a legally required piece of documentation that must be completed when waste changes hands to ensure it is being managed safely and responsibly.
Our experienced team can help you demonstrate a clear audit trail of the waste type, quantity, and the entities involved in its transfer so you can have peace of mind that you’re always compliant.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is not considered general waste?
While general waste covers most waste that cannot be recycled, hazardous waste, electrical items, clinical waste, sanitary products, and most food waste should not be put in a general waste bin and must be disposed of separately.
Who is responsible for the waste transfer note?
Your business and the business taking your waste are both responsible for the waste transfer note (WTN). When you set up a new waste collection, you both must fill in sections that apply to you, sign it, and keep a copy for at least 2 years.
Failure to produce a WTN on demand can result in a fixed penalty notice of £300 or prosecution with a maximum fine of £5,000.
How do businesses get rid of waste?
A waste management service, such as WM101, can help businesses legally, responsibly, and safely dispose of any waste they generate – prioritising prevention, reuse, recycling, and recovery opportunities (the Waste Hierarchy).
